Newfoundland and Labrador

Overview
Newfoundland and Labrador (typically referred to solely as Newfoundland) encompasses a total area of 152,000 sq. miles and is greater in size that than every state in the US except Alaska, Texas and California. Much of the population of 600,000 is concentrated in a few cities and towns and the rest is spread out among the hundreds of small "outports" villages situated around the small bays and inlets dotting the coast. Newfoundland's climate is described as moderate and maritime. The most homogeneous of all Canadian provinces, approximately 98% of Newfoundland's population was born in Newfoundland and almost everyone's first language is English. Newfoundland's and Labrador's major cities include the capital city, St. John's and Corner Brook. It entered the Canadian Confederation in 1949.

Universities, Community Colleges and Private Career Colleges
Post-secondary education in Newfoundland is delivered through Memorial University of Newfoundland and the College of the North Atlantic. Memorial University includes the main campus and the Marine Institute, both in St. John's; Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook; a residential campus in Harlow, England; and the Institut Frecker on the neighboring French island of St. Pierre. The College of the North Atlantic consists of eighteen regional campuses.

Private training institutions have operated in the province for more than thirty-five years. Today, a large number of these institutions offer a wide variety of employment-oriented training programs.
