Overview Prince Edward Island, usually referred to as PEI, at 5,524 sq. miles is the smallest Canadian province. It has a population of approximately 138,000. The island's early inhabitants were the MicMac Indians who called their home, "abegweit" (meaning "land cradled by waters"). In 1534 the French explorer Jacques Cartier discovered PEI and with three years the British also claimed the island as their own and founded Charlottetown as their capital in 1763. In 1799 the island was named for Prince Edward, the father of Queen Victoria. Prince Edward Island's major cities include the capital city, Charlottetown and Summerside. It entered the Canadian Confederation in 1873.

Post-secondary education in Prince Edward Island is delivered through the province's one publicly funded university, the University of Prince Edward Island; Holland College, a publicly funded community college with eleven training centres throughout the province; and, a number of private career colleges. Approximately twenty private career colleges offer a wide assortment of vocational programs ranging from computer technology to personal health care.
